Terms of Service

1. Agreement

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the HanziFluency website at hanzifluency.com (the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. The Service

HanziFluency is a free, browser-based study tool for learning Mandarin Chinese characters and vocabulary. The Service runs entirely in your web browser; no account is required and no study data is transmitted to a server operated by us. See the Privacy Policy for details.

3. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes. In particular, you agree not to:

• Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or compromise the integrity or security of the Service.
• Use automated tools to make excessive or abusive requests against the Service or its content delivery providers.
• Misrepresent the Service or pass off any part of it as your own.
• Use the Service in violation of applicable laws, including export-control and sanctions laws.

4. Intellectual property

The HanziFluency name, branding, user interface, and original written content are the intellectual property of the publisher. Character data, stroke-order animations, and similar reference material are sourced from open datasets — primarily the Make Me a Hanzi project (Arphic Public License) and the hanzi-writer-data project — and remain subject to their original licences. You retain ownership of any decks, notes, or content you create using the Service; because that content is stored locally in your browser, we have no rights over it.

5. No warranty

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the educational content (translations, pronunciations, frequency rankings, HSK level assignments, etc.) is free from inaccuracies. You are responsible for verifying any information that matters to you against authoritative sources.

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the publisher will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data or progress, arising from your use of or inability to use the Service. Because all study data is stored only on your device, you are responsible for backing it up if its preservation matters to you (the Decks page provides export functionality).

7. Third-party services

The Service incorporates content delivered by third parties, including font and stroke-data providers and (where enabled) advertising networks. Those services are subject to their own terms and privacy policies, which you can review through the links in our Privacy Policy. We are not responsible for third-party content or service availability.

8. Advertising

The Service may display advertising. Advertisements are clearly distinguishable from editorial content. We do not endorse advertised products or services and are not responsible for the accuracy or legality of advertising content supplied by third-party networks.

9. Changes

We may update these Terms from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
